Fuel fabrication is being done at China Institute of Atomic Energy in Beijing, while the core and all other components are fabricated at India Atomic Energy Commission Limited (IAECL) in Bangalore. India is capable of fabricating specialised components like heat exchangers, for which the technology has been developed. The AHWR would thus be completely indigenised, making it the first instance in the history of nuclear power, of non-NPT nations constructing a nuclear power reactor for commercial generation.
Tata Group, although a very large industrial organization, has no nuclear engineering expertise. However, the company has a large engineering corps of around 400,000 engineers, and has a good record in designing large industrial projects. An earlier project, the 1,000 MWe SKB Prototype Reactor near Hyderabad, built jointly with Westinghouse, used some foreign expertise (Westinghouse designed the pressure vessels, AT&T contributed the reactor core).
The Indian team has, for the first time, brought in an IT company like IBM to provide software engineering expertise for the project, while the engineering work is being done at the IAEC. So in all, seven multinational companies, besides India, are involved in the Project.
At the same time, part of the supercritical water reactor work is being done at a joint venture between TATAs NuEarth, a subsidiary of NuEarth Engineering Ltd, Japan, and TATAs AiTek, with the advantage that the primary facility of AiTek, at Miryang, in Korea, is only some 400 km away from the site of the design. 3d9ccd7d82
