About the Book
Plot Summary
Chains tells the story of Isabel, a thirteen-year-old enslaved girl who lives in Rhode Island in 1776. She and her younger sister Ruth were supposed to be freed by their owner Miss Mary Finch when she died, but instead they are sold to a cruel Loyalist couple in New York City. There, Isabel meets Curzon, a slave boy who works for the Patriots and convinces Isabel to spy on her masters and report any information that could help the rebel cause. Isabel hopes that by doing this, she can earn her freedom and protect her sister.
However, things get complicated when Isabel discovers a plot to assassinate George Washington, the leader of the Continental Army. She also faces danger from her abusive masters, who punish her harshly for any sign of disobedience or rebellion. Isabel must use her courage, intelligence, and determination to survive and fight for her freedom and her sister's.
Historical Context
Chains is set during the American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. This was the war in which the thirteen American colonies fought against Great Britain to gain their independence and become the United States of America. The war was sparked by various political and economic conflicts, such as taxation without representation, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. The colonists were divided into two groups: the Patriots, who supported the revolution, and the Loyalists, who remained loyal to the British crown.
The war had a significant impact on the lives of enslaved people, who made up about 20% of the population in the colonies. Some enslaved people fought for either side, hoping to earn their freedom or better treatment. Some escaped to join the British, who promised them liberty if they joined their army. Some joined the Patriots, who also promised them freedom in exchange for their service. However, many of these promises were not kept, and many enslaved people remained enslaved or were recaptured after the war. Some also faced violence and discrimination from both sides.
In Chains, Isabel witnesses many historical events and meets many historical figures, such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, John Hancock, and King George III. She also reads Common Sense, a famous pamphlet by Thomas Paine that argued for independence from Britain. The novel also depicts the harsh realities of life in New York City during the war, such as food shortages, fires, diseases, riots, and executions.
Themes and Symbols
Chains explores many themes that are relevant to both history and today's world, such as freedom, loyalty, courage, identity, family, and justice. The novel also uses various symbols to convey its messages, such as chains, seeds, birds, fire, and water.
One of the main themes of Chains is freedom. The novel shows how different people have different definitions and experiences of freedom. For Isabel, freedom means being able to live with her sister without fear or pain. For Curzon, freedom means fighting for a cause he believes in. For the Patriots, freedom means breaking away from Britain's tyranny. For the Loyalists, freedom means maintaining their status and privileges under Britain's rule. The novel also shows how freedom is not easily achieved or guaranteed; it requires sacrifice, struggle, and perseverance.
Another theme of Chains is loyalty. The novel shows how loyalty can be both a strength and a weakness. Loyalty can inspire people to do brave and noble things for their friends, family, or country. Loyalty can also blind people to the truth or make them betray their own values or interests. Isabel faces many dilemmas regarding loyalty: Should she be loyal to her masters or to Curzon? Should she be loyal to the Patriots or to the Loyalists? Should she be loyal to herself or to her sister? The novel also shows how loyalty can be tested by circumstances and choices.
A third theme of Chains is courage. The novel shows how courage can take many forms and come from many sources. Courage can mean standing up for what is right or speaking out against what is wrong. Courage can mean risking one's life or safety for a greater good or a personal goal. Courage can mean enduring hardship or pain with dignity or hope. Isabel demonstrates courage in many ways throughout the novel: She defies her masters; she spies for the Patriots; she rescues her sister; she escapes from slavery.
One of the main symbols of Chains is chains. Chains represent slavery and oppression; they are used to bind and control enslaved people physically and mentally. Isabel is constantly reminded of her chains by her iron collar that she wears around her neck; it marks her as a slave and causes her pain and humiliation. However, chains also represent resistance and strength; they are used to break free and fight back against injustice. Isabel uses her chains as a weapon to defend herself from her master; she also uses them as a tool to unlock doors and escape from captivity.
Another symbol of Chains is seeds. Seeds represent hope and growth; they are used to plant new life and new possibilities. Isabel keeps a pouch of seeds that belonged to her mother; they remind her of her past and her future. She also plants some seeds in a garden; they symbolize her dreams and aspirations. However, seeds also represent uncertainty and danger; they are used to spread fire and destruction. Isabel witnesses how some seeds are used to start 71b2f0854b
